Exhibition Hall 6 – Dignity of Legendary Escorts
There were ten most renowned escort masters in ancient times:
Li Guanming, the originator of the rule "No escort chants through Cangzhou";
Li Fenglan, master of double broadswords;
Che Yonghong, grandmaster of Xingyi Quan;
Dai Erlü, preeminent master of Xingyi Quan in North China;
Wang Zhengqing, hailed as the "Flour King" of North China;
Zuo Erba, known as "Iron Leg";
Wang Zibin, nicknamed Big Sword Wang Wuyi;
Li Cunyi, master of the single broadsword;
Zhao Guangdi, champion of free combat;
Li Yaochen, a consummate all-round martial artist.
Among them, Wang Zhengqing, Zuo Erba and Dai Erlü are collectively known as the Three Heroes of North China. A popular folk jingle records their fame:
Wang’s spear, Dai’s fist, Zuo’s kicking skills travel all under heaven;
Backed by the Daoguang Emperor, they conquer every foe without rival.
Since Wang Zhengqing shared the same martial arts master as the Daoguang Emperor, his agency never lost a single consignment during all its escort missions, boasting an impeccable reputation.
The shrine here enshrines Guan Gong, whom all land escorts worshipped before setting off to pray for safe journeys. Guan Gong stands as the embodiment of loyalty, trustworthiness, righteousness and bravery, and worshipping him served as an inner moral restraint for all escorts. An outstanding escort needed not only extraordinary martial prowess, but also integrity, loyalty and rectitude. They bore full responsibility for safely delivering all entrusted cargo. Failure to fulfill this duty would bring devastating financial losses to the agency and ruin the escort’s career within the trade. Throughout the 300-year history of escort agencies, cases of escorts stealing the consignments under their guard were extremely rare — a testament to their adherence to the virtues of loyalty, righteousness and bravery, which is also a core reason why Guan Gong was enshrined in every agency.
